This month’s success story focuses on a recently housed client, Justo Guevara. Justo is a senior citizen living in South Los Angeles. We started working together at the beginning of last year. Justo has always been a very outgoing client, eager to complete his housing process and have punctual meetings with his care team. After months of waiting for a unit, we could finally house Justo through SOLA rentals. Justo is happy to have his own home and privacy after many months of being in a shelter and on the streets. Justo continued to work to get to where he is today, no matter the obstacles that came his way. Justo now has a home where his children visit, thanks to CRCD!
Justo was housed at the end of last year after not having stable housing for almost ten years. Justo bounced around South Los Angeles and the Downtown area to be near resources for the homeless. Justo first came to the United States after the Nicaraguan Civil War; Justo explains how he saw the war unfold from the beginning and eventually had to be a part of it. At one point, the United States accepted political refugees “Like Scarface,” Justo says. That is when he got to Los Angeles with his family. But eventually, Justo’s family moved to Nevada and other parts of the Country, but Justo refused to leave Los Angeles.
He was injured at work, which triggered a slow financial decline, leaving him on the streets.
Justo’s biggest obstacle is having enough financial support to cover his bills. Justo receives General Relief and works very lightly when he can. With Justo’s family being far away, he often did not have anyone to turn to. Justo is very grateful for the services he receives from CRCD.
Justo has been faced with many obstacles but has always found the grit needed to get to the finish line. Justo said that if there were no hard times, life would be boring.
