$200,000 to South LA Non-Profit Organizations Will Help Reduce Homelessness Among South LA At-Risk Youth Through Support Services, Housing, and Advocacy

LOS ANGELES – Coalition for Responsible Community Development (CRCD) has been named as one of the 2019 Bank of America Neighborhood Builders® awardees for Los Angeles. The nonprofit was selected for their work addressing barriers to employment and housing stability for youth ages 18-24, many of whom may be transitioning out of the foster care system.

The largest corporate philanthropic investment in nonprofit leadership in the country, Bank of America Neighborhood Builders each receive a $200,000 grant, a year of leadership training for the executive director and an emerging leader at the organization, a network of peer organizations across the U.S., and the opportunity to access capital to expand their impact.

According to the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority, there are approximately 59,000 homeless individuals in the county on any given night in 2019. Nearly 9,000 of this population are minors and young adults, marking a 22 percent increase in this age sector (transition age youth ages 18-24) from a year ago.

“Affordable housing and homelessness continue to be key issues affecting Los Angeles County, impeding economic stability for individuals and the community at large,” said Raul A. Anaya, market president for Greater Los Angeles, Bank of America. “The local organizations selected for the Neighborhood Builders program are leading the charge to reduce homelessness in Los Angeles, working directly with homeless parents and youth to address their immediate and long-term needs that are fundamental to building lifelong stability and success.”

The Coalition for Responsible Community Development provides neighborhood-based community development solutions in South Los Angeles and the Vernon-Central neighborhood, uniquely focused on services to keep at-risk teens off of – or returning to – the streets. It does this through the creation of affordable and permanent supportive housing, partnerships with school districts and county agencies serving youth, as well as job skills training and placement for young adults.

CRCD has developed and owns 320 units of housing in South L.A. with on-site case management and program services and is working to triple that housing portfolio through the development of 873 additional affordable housing units in the pipeline with 233 of those set aside for youth and young families. The Neighborhood Builders grant will be used to help fund these new affordable and permanent supportive housing units and hire additional staff for its job-training program. CRCD Chief Program Officer, Jahrell Thomas, will participate in the Neighborhood Builder emerging leaders training, reflecting the organization’s commitment to a homegrown approach of fostering local leadership in the communities it serves. Jahrell begin his journey with CRCD in 2005 as part of the South LA Graffiti Abatement Crew, he most recently served as the Director of CRCD’s Youth Development Department before his promotion to Chief Program Officer.
